Foreign identification card (TIE)

What you need to know​

The Identity Card for Foreign Nationals, commonly known as the TIE, serves as the definitive document verifying the legal status and identity of non-EU foreign nationals in Spain. This is especially pertinent for those holding a residence permit with a validity exceeding six months or for any individual granted a long-term residence permit. Embedded within the card are crucial details such as the holder’s identification information,a photograph, and the NIE (Foreigner’s Identity Number), in addition to specifying the nature of the permission granted for staying or residing within Spain. All aliens who have been issued a visa or permission to stay in Spain for a period longer than six months have the right and duty to obtain the Foreigner Identity Card, which must be requested personally within a month from the date of entry in Spain or from the moment that authorization is granted or becomes effective.

Eligibility for the TIE:

  • Non-EU nationals aiming to reside in Spain for over six months.
  • Any foreign nationals awarded a long-term residence permit.

Prerequisites for Application:

To be eligible for the TIE, applicants must fulfill at least one of the following conditions:

  • Possession of a valid visa or residence permit authorizing a stay in Spain for more than six months.
  • A change or modification in the legal or employment status of the applicant, including
    instances where the residence permit needs renewal. If you applied for residence in Spain or modification of residence.   • Replacement needs arising from the theft, loss, or damage of a previously issued TIE.

Application: place and documentation:

The application for the Foreigner Identity Card must be presented in person by the foreigner in the Immigration Office, or if failing to do so, at the police station in the province where the person has been registered.

The following documents are necessary:

  1. You must download, fill out and sign the form in duplicate. For the profiles of students and self-employed or self-employed workers, form EX-17 must be used. For the profiles of students and self-employed workers or freelancers, the form must be used EX-17 , since their procedure is governed by the general procedure (Organic Law 4/2000).
  2. Passport or travel document with the entry stamp, signed or marked at a border post. Original passport, which must be valid (and complete copy) .
  3. Three recent photographs, in color, on a white background, passport size.
  4. You must pay the fee prior to the appointment, as you must justify the payment. There is a single model (form 790, code 012) to make the payment, in which you must indicate the exact type of document you request.
  5. Empadronamiento.
  6. Initial residence card (in the case of a renewal).
  7. The original decision to grant you a residence permit. Resolucion Favorable .
  8. Appointment confirmation.
  9. For the profiles under the so-called Entrepreneurs Law (Law 14/2013), the official MI-TIE form must be used. This applies to the profiles managed by the Large Companies Unit (UGE): investors, entrepreneurs, highly qualified professionals, researchers, professionals conducting intra-company transfers, remote workers or digital nomads, and professionals in audiovisual and cultural productions, as well as family members of the aforementioned profiles. On the other hand, there are two special cases that require support:
  • If the applicant is a minor, he must be accompanied by his duly documented legal representative (father, mother or guardian).
  • And if it is a card for family reunification, the reunified person must be accompanied by the reunifying family member with their original card.
In case of theft or loss of the card. You need to provide the same documents and a police report ( Denuncia ) about the loss of the card. It’s important to note that all documents must be presented in their original form for verification purposes but will be promptly returned after the copies have been checked. The documents must be translated into Spanish by a sworn translator and legalised. You also need to have an insurance policy in Spain that covers all treatment costs. At the end of the appointment, you will receive a receipt to collect your card within a period of approximately forty days. The receipt will indicate the place of collection.You may pick up your TIE card about 30-45 days after your fingerprinting . In some police stations you need to take an appointment to pick up a residence card.
