Residency for EU nationals in Spain | "Green NIE"
What you need to know
“Green NIE” is what many people call Residency for EU nationals or Certificado de Registro UE. Are you a citizen of a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) member state planning to stay in Spain for more than 90 days within a 180-day period? If so, you must apply for the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la UE. Here’s what you need to know:
Who need it?
Citizens of EU or EEA member states.
Stay in Spain for more than 90 days within a 180-day period.
Spend at least 3 months in a 6-month period in Spain or plan to settle permanently, spending more than 6 months per year.
Fall into one of these categories:
Self-employed
Employee
Student
Unemployed with sufficient income and health insurance (e.g., retirees)
Relative of an EU or EEA citizen.
How to get?
The first step is to make an appointment (cita previa ) on the SEDE – Administraciones Públicas administracionespublicas.gob.es in the province where you reside.
What documents are needed? General list of documents for everyone
Your appointment will take place at the Dirección General de Policía or at the Oficina de Extranjería (the address is given to you when you make the appointment) and you will need to bring the documentation below:
- The completed Modelo 790-012 form which will allow you to pay the administration costs ( which are currently 12 € ).
- You will need to bring the proof of payment. Completed and signed fee.
- The complete completed EX-18 application form.
- Your original passport ( or identity card ) and a photocopy.
- Your Empadronamiento. Registration is a document registration at the city hall.
- Proof of appointment ( print out the appointment confirmation as a police officer at the entrance will check if you are on the list ).
- When documents from other countries are provided, they must be translated into Spanish.
All documents must be original.

Additional documents for self-employed individuals
- Proof of registration in Censo de Actividades Económicas.
- Proof of registration in Registro Mercantil.
- Social security number.
- Informe de vida laboral ( IDC ). Employment history report. You may be asked for a work-life report as a foreigner in Spain.
Additional documents for students
- Proof of university registration (public or private) – Matricula.
- Private Insurance: A SPANISH HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY that clearly provides proof of coverage for all preventative, diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services performed in health centers (general outpatient medicine 100%, Treatments 100%, Hospitalization 100% – meaning, NO LIMITS OR COPAYMENTS equivalent to the Spanish Public Social Security system. (Travel insurances, European Health Insurance Cards, or student insurances are not accepted), or Public Insurance from another EU country: Yes. E106, E109, E121, etc., issued and validated by the EU country, where you are a beneficiary of its coverage (MAXIMUM 3 MONTHS OLD).
- Proof or declaration that you have sufficient resources for your entire stay in Spain.
Additional documents for unemployed or workers from outside Spain
- Private Insurance: A SPANISH HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY that clearly provides proof of coverage for all preventative, diagnostic, treatment, and rehabilitation services performed in health centers (general outpatient medicine 100%, Treatments 100%, Hospitalization 100% – meaning, NO LIMITS OR COPAYMENTS equivalent to the Spanish Public Social Security system. (Travel insurances, European Health Insurance Cards, or student insurances are not accepted), or Public Insurance from another EU country: Yes. E106, E109, E121, etc., issued and validated by the EU country, where you are a beneficiary of its coverage (MAXIMUM 3 MONTHS OLD).
- Proof or declaration that you have sufficient resources for your entire stay in Spain. Have financial resources be the holder of an account and have the value of 7,250 eur minimum, if the account is joint, have the value of 14,500 eur . Present the bank statement of the account signed by the director.
Additional documents for relatives of EU or EEA citizens
- Proof that you are a relative of this person (marriage contract, family record book, etc.).
- Proof of economic dependence.
- Proof that your relative works or has sufficient resources and a public or private health insurance.
